Farewell, Franken Fran

Here they are, chapters 60 and 61 of Franken Fran. I wanted to get this out by yesterday to coincide with my 3rd-year anniversary as a scanlator, but real life unfortunately got in the way. As I said before, chapter 61 is unfortunately the last chapter of Franken Fran. I'll withhold myself from spoiling anything, but I will say that like the ending of Black Jack, it lacks a certain oomph that episodic series ought to have in their end. In any case, Franken Fran v8 is set to come out in Japan on the 20th of this month, so hopefully it won't be too long until I can get scans to translate the little extra that Kigitsu puts at the end. We probably won't get an actual omake chapter, since I would assume the space for that is taken by the 2nd Phase20 oneshot but one can always hope.

In other news, Kigitsu isn't going to be slacking around as she's getting right into her next new series titled "Hasami-Onna" (Scissors-woman) which'll start in next- No wait, actually I think it's this month's issue of Champion Red. Perhaps that in itself might imply Kigitsu put an end to Franken Fran as she had other ideas she wanted to try but not have it constrained by the usual format of Franken Fran. But I can't say anything for certain until I see what her new manga will be like.

Oh, and to those who want to ask me if I'll pick up her new manga, my answer is no (for the time being) since I want to give additional focus to finishing up Joe. So if you're a translator and you like Kigitsu, hopefully you'll take the initiative. If not, I'll probably come back to it once I finish Joe.

Note: Apparently, I'm a fucking retard who never bothered to check up his sources because Kigitsu is actually a man (like everyone thought before being told otherwise). I don't know where I initially heard this from and even mangaupdates (though I guess that's not a very reliable database at all) had his gender listed as female. In any case, I've learned my lesson to always check sources first.

  7. Thanks for all the hard work on this series. Sad that it had to end. :( As for Kigitsu's next project, where may I be able to find it?

  9. Thank you so much for all the translated Fran you gave us these years.
About the author's gender: I think on manga fox I've read a "her" referring to Kigitsu in the Helen ESP topic. It's been so long ago though that I could be very wrong.

  16. >Kigitsu is a man
I trusted you, Hox! I truuuuusted youuuuuuuuuu!

Well, it's finally over, big guy. Even though it had been losing steam for a while, I still feel sad to see it go. How do you feel about it? Do you know if the Scissors-woman series is going to be centered around the girl with the huge scissors from the old Fran extras?

Also, both of these chapters have "Kuhou" spelled like "Kubou." Intentional?

  17. Fucking retard?
    Don't be so hard on yourself;
you're the coolest fucking retard I know of.

Thanks for finishing this wacky, fun series

  18. Ah shit, that was my mistake. Fuck Kubou for getting me all mixed up. And I don't know anything more about his new manga. We'll just have to wait for the first chapter later this month.

  19. I would fuck Kubou. All of them.

  21. Man, I have been reading this forever, and in ended in such a short notice. Between Fran, Punpun, Zero, Kurosawa, Furuya's works and many more, I can't believe how many hours I've invested reading your translations. So, I might as well take the time and say thank you for everything. And I always expected with glee for every new credit gag ("I hate japanese game shows so goddamned much!" makes me chuckle every single time). You're awesome, man.

    PD: selfcest doujin fucking when?

  22. Oh gods! Cruelty has struck. My Fran, my beloved, has forever been stolen from my life. Those precious afternoons spent with her, reading through her fantastic journeys, are of quantity now expired. If I had known this would end, would I have been able to treasure them more? But now that it is over, a thought which at once saddens me, also invigors within a deep gratitude.

Thanks you Hox, for all you have done over the years. Please share my unbounded appreciation with anyone and everyone that carries responsibility for making these stories accessible to my English-bound mind.

    1. That all depends on when my raw provider sends me the scans.

  25. 5 FEBRUARY? guess I had to check one of my all-time favourite series status sooner. I felt like Kigitsu was running out of gas in the last chapters, but who could imagine such a brutal ending?
its kind of stupid, and redundant at this point, but I feel sad.
    bloody fucking hell.

  26. I've noticed the raw of volume 8 is already there in the Internet, so I'm curious to know if you will post the extras of that volume - since Fran ended a few months ago.

    Sorry if I'm sounding demanding.

  27. Wait, does this take place after Panoramic Island or before it?

  28. Thanks so much for doing this awesome series. One question... do you know why the two Frans were labelled L and M instead of the obvious L and R?

    1. Oh, woops. That's a slip-up of mine that I hadn't noticed. In the original text, it's H and M for Hidari(left) and Migi(Right). I planned to translate it as L and R, but when it came to M, my brain must've forgot what the fuck it was doing and left it as it was.

    2. Ah, that explains it. Thanks.
