Baka & Gogh & Updates

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When it comes to art style in manga, Katou Shinkichi is my absolute favourite. Unfortunately, as is the case for guys like Toyoda Tetsuya and Matsunaga Toyokazu, Katou too falls into the category of highly unproflic mangaka. Of course, that's less their fault and more the fact that non-mainstream works rarely, if ever, sell well. Nevertheless, we should all be thankful that guys like them still continue to work in the manga industry instead of straight-up quitting due to depression or committing suicide. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I found out he started a new series recently (Planet of Sutakola, ongoing in Japan at 3 volumes). In any case, Happy Scans and I are happy to announce that his Baka & Gogh is fully scanlated at last! Mangascreener had previously scanlated all but the last 3 chapters, which drove me nuts until they blessed me with me the opportunity to finish this project up. My translations, I admit, are notably inferior compared to Stephen Paul's fantastic work, but I hope it's adequate enough to deliver a satisfying conclusion to this wonderful tale of personal growth, love, and friendship.

Now, time for some status updates. Minus apparently had the bright idea to disable uploading archive files so I've no choice but to ditch the site. I'm gonna give mediafire another try (3rd try's the charm, right?) but not upload any Biomega, Bokurano, and Vinland Saga chapters due to licensing reasons. If you need those manga, just try bakabt, as they have a handy torrent for the whole thing. THE NEW MEDIAFIRE SITE IS: http://www.mediafire.com/hox-no-boxI'll add more files to it in the coming weeks.

*Update: Apparently the first volume mediafire link is blocked already. [sarcasm]Man, I'm seriously considering on just uploading all my shit on exhentai.com right now. That place comes with online readers, torrents, archives, and everything.[/sarcasm]
As for my "break", it'll go on for 6 more weeks, and I'll officially come out of it by releasing Punpun v10 in early December. That being said, I will use some of my free time until then to finish translating Alabaster as well as blogging about my thoughts on some manga I recently bought.

  1. V1 has been blocked by Mediafire. Looks interesting though, I'll give it a shot.

Early December seems so far away...

    1. Well fuck. Guess I'll just give up on mf for good.

  2. "That place comes with online readers, torrents, archives, and everything."

Which requires an account (not an issue) and archive downloads require funbucks (this is extremely irritating). Not an ideal solution, really.

That said, I'm not sure what is. Mediafire has been largely useless since they started cracking down on shit around MU's takedown.

Anyhow, thanks for your continued efforts.

So, if I understood correctly, you'll still continue bringing us Vinland and the other monthlies, but for now you're looking for a place other than Mediafire to upload them?

    1. Yeah, pretty much. Preferably one where they don't delete the files and easy to organize. I'm sort of experimenting with a lot of them right now. 4shared seems okay, but I can't seem to find a way to link to the root folder.

    2. I have good experience with 2shared for single uploads, not sure they have organizing capabilities though. Thanks for Baka & Gogh!

  4. I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression that e-hentai wasn't allowing published non-h manga series to be added going forward (i.e. non-h uploads would be restricted to artbooks and doujinshi).

Anyways, thanks for finishing Baka & Gogh.

    1. The files I've uploaded so far are fine but I just can't upload any more, making it rather useless.

  6. Did you hear Vinland saga was licensed? What does mean for your releases of it?

  7. Looks like an interesting haul. I have Soratobi Tamashii and Atarashii Asa but haven't gotten around to reading them. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    Many thanks.

  10. I know you didn't translate all of this, but thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for bringing it to my attention!! I haven't been this deeply moved by a manga in a long, long time.

  11. Wow, looking at the picture of new manga you've got-seems there is a lot of great alternative works there (just judging by the cover in most cases ;) )Have a good read.
what about the 'Planet of Sutakola'? Do you think, you might give it a try one day?

  12. Dang, I love the art style and imagery in this... The way reality and fantasy just kinda melt together reminds me a lot of Tatami Galaxy.

  13. Woah, Baka to Gogh and you might talk about Atarashii Asa and Igarashi stuff? awesome.

  14. Speaking of Toyoda Tetsuya, have you ever thought on working on his stuff, Hox?

It's hard enough to find his stuff online as it is but when Coffee Time still remains incomplete, I can't help but feel I'm losing a smile or too.

Speaking of mediafire Hox, Ronin Ixioran, the guy translation the Birdy the Mighty manga also had his mediafire files constantly suspended until he started naming the uploaded rar files in Japanese. Maybe you should try the same.

    1. Yes, but as with a lot of manga, the lack of freely available raws is an issue. Also, thanks for the suggestion but I think that would just hinder a lot of the English-speaking mangafans from knowing what file is what.

I already stumbled on VS 87 raws, hopefully you did too :). The wait is killing me, especially since I stumbled on Afternoon magazine's website that seemed to indicate the October issue came out yesterday.

    Want! :D

  17. Tried ge.tt or minus.com?

  18. Okay. Two questions:

-How in the world do you just randomly stumble upon all this awesome non-mainstream manga?

-How big is your IRL manga collection?

Thanks to you, mine is getting pretty big now. Thanks for all the really neat stuff you translate so people can read.
